Reacting to messages

Answer a message with a single emoji instead of typing "got it" for the tenth time today. Reactions work on web and mobile, both you and your clients can use them, and they appear instantly for everyone.

Basic  Not every message needs a sentence back. When a client sends their check-in photo or says “done, session finished”, a reaction acknowledges it in one tap, without adding another message to the thread.

Adding a reaction

Reactions live in the same menu as the other message actions, so there’s nothing new to learn:

Platform How to react
Web Hover the message and open its action menu (the icon). The emoji row sits at the top.
Mobile Press and hold the message bubble. The emoji row sits at the top of the sheet.

Pick an emoji and it attaches to the message immediately, for everyone in the conversation.

The emoji row sits at the top of the same menu you already use for Reply, Forward and Copy. Your own reaction shows as a highlighted chip under the bubble.

The six reactions

There’s a fixed set of six, deliberately small so a reaction stays quick to read at a glance:

👍❤️😂😮😢🙏
The full set: thumbs up, heart, laugh, surprised, sad, and thanks. There's no custom-emoji picker.

Removing or changing a reaction

  • Tap your own reaction chip under the message to take it off.
  • Or open the menu again and tap the same emoji, which toggles it off too.
  • Want a different one? Add the new emoji and remove the old one. Your reactions are yours; removing one never touches anyone else’s.

Your own reaction is easy to spot: the chip is highlighted when it includes you, and plain when it’s only other people.

How reactions appear

  • Reactions sit as small chips under the message, one per emoji, each with a count of how many people used it.
  • The count is a total. Reactions don’t show a list of who reacted, so in a group you’ll see how many said 👍, not which members.
  • They appear live. A reaction you add shows up on your client’s phone straight away, and theirs shows up in your dashboard, with no refresh.

One chip per emoji with a count. The highlighted chip is one you reacted to yourself; the plain chip is other people only.

Notes

  • Your clients can react too, from the mobile app, using the same press-and-hold. Expect a 👍 back on your instructions rather than a message. It’s worth telling clients this exists: see Messaging on mobile.
  • Any message can be reacted to, including your own and messages with photos, videos or voice notes.
  • Reactions don’t send a push notification. They’re the quiet acknowledgement, not a nudge. If you need someone’s attention, send a message or an @mention.
  • Your team reacts as you. Just like replies, a reaction from an admin on your team reaches the client as coming from you, keeping one consistent coach voice. Two admins tapping 👍 on the same message count as one, not two. See the shared team inbox.
  • Reactions are separate from read receipts. A 👍 means “I’ve seen this and I’m answering it”; the ticks tell you the message arrived. See the status icons in Messaging basics.
